Every tree under our care carries a number on a tan cord before it carries a cut. We prune to the limits recorded on the tag, we lower every section rather than drop it, and we walk away only when the ring counter matches the scaffold plan. That is the whole method: survey-true pruning, from the first tag to the final signed-off ring.

Tree Risk Assessment Surveys

Before any crane goes up or any saw bites, an arborist from Sky Blue Arboriculture Limited walks the whole line with a measuring hoop, a striking tool and a clean record sheet. We read each crown in four zones from the ground: the root plate, the trunk flare, the branch unions and the outer scaffold. We note lean, cavity depth, bark condition, broken branch pockets and the character of the soil around every root plate, and we grade the risk on a scale written for an estate room rather than for a shelf. Every notable finding earns a numbered tag and a clear revisit window, from an annual watch to an immediate call, with a plain cue in the report to monitor, prune, cable or remove. We keep the language plain so grounds staff can act the same day the tag goes on.

Crown Pruning and Reduction

Canopy work at an estate aims at a few clear things: more light for a lawn, a cleaner shape at a building wall, or reduced sail against a stiff wind. Our climbers set the climbing line high and work the reduction from the inside out, so a tree never looks as though it has been folded at the edges. We remove deadwood and the crossing leaders that rub each other, thin congested branch unions, and pull weight out of the outer crown rather than cutting a long limb back to a bare stub. Every included bark point gets a note, and every finished cut end is left clean and sloped so it sheds water and seals calmly. When we finish, the crown keeps the character it grew with, the skyline stays whole, and the tree holds a structure strong enough to ride out the next season without complaint.

Canopy Rigging and Sectional Removals

When a whole tree has to come out next to a wall, a fence, a terrace, a boundary hedge or a parked vehicle, the basket crew does the removal in controlled sections rather than felling the whole stem in one roll. Each limb is tied to a lowering line that runs back through a block to waiting ground handlers, who walk the load down gently so no single section ever swings free or drifts sideways. Sections are tallied on the ring counter as they land and are checked against the removal plan before the climber moves on to the next cut. The stem is then headed in stages, each topped piece lowered, until the last stub is cleared and ground is prepared. This is the line that keeps tight London plane and maple courts open across municipal paving and private gardens alike, with no dropped section finding its way onto the hardscape below.

Young Tree Structuring

Planting a young linden, maple or oak is only half the work, because the first eight seasons decide the whole future shape of that trunk and crown. Our young tree programme comes back year on year to choose and keep a single strong leader, to space the scaffold branches evenly along the stem, to ease the tight branch angles that would split under a heavy load later on, and to let the lower limbs hold bark thickness for a few seasons longer before we slowly lift the crown. Pruning wounds stay small, hardwood strips stay off the stem, and the protective bark lines are left whole and healthy. The payoff appears quietly over time: a straight, stable trunk, a well-spaced canopy, and a tree that will not need a major corrective cut or an expensive remove in twenty years time. This gentle early structuring is the quietest and most valuable line our crew runs across a whole avenue.

Root Zone and Soil Care

A tree that stands in tired or compacted soil lets the fact show in its crown long before the trunk gives any sign, so good ground work answers the tree at its own level. We inspect the root plate flare, relieve compacted ground where paving or footfall has squeezed the pores shut, add a chipped mulch ring laid at the correct depth back from the trunk collar, and aerate gently with a hand tine so the fine feeder roots take up water and air again. Where a root has lifted a walkway, we coordinate the cleanest cut with the paving crew so the tree keeps its best anchoring roots while the path returns to a safe level. Because the benefit shows slowly, we explain what we do and why; good soil care is the unseen part of arboriculture and it pays back the most across the seasons.

Storm Response and Cleanup

After a heavy weather event the calls tend to arrive in the same set of shapes every time: a limb lying across a roof, a split crown hanging over a lane, or a whole tree down across a boundary hedge. Our crew arrives with the basket truck and the full block and tackle kit, releases each hanging load in a careful order, and opens the way safely while the day is still early. Sound trees are stabilised rather than written off, broken ones are removed stem by stem, debris is chipped away on site, and the boundary is left neat and walkable. Because storm work follows no timetable, estate clients hold our emergency number year round and we answer it round the clock during a weather event. The aim of every call is the same: make the place safe first, then clear the access, then leave the ground tidy before the last of the light goes out of the sky.

THE CLIMB RUN

How a single tree gets signed off

Five stations on the rope line, each one recorded before the climber moves up the next. The run ends on the ground, with the ring counter matching the plan.

Assess

Ground walk, cavity and lean reading, tag applied, plan written before the first knot is thrown.

Climb

Lines set above the work zone, climber up the trunk, basket or spur to the first ring plateau.

Prune

Reduction cuts read from the outside in, deadwood and crossing leaders cleared, ends clean.

Rig

Sectional loads tied and walked down through the block until only the stub and stem remain.

Lower

Stem headed and lowered whole, stump ground flat, and the crew comes back to ground level.
